Before we go directly into Silicone Sealant.
Let me enlighten you on what is silicone.
What is Silicone?
Back to basics - ChemistrySilicones are inerts, synthetics compounds, with a variety of forms and uses. The chemical name for silicone is polymerized siloxanes or polysiloxanes. It is inorganic - organic polymers with a chemical formula [R2SiO]n - R is an organic group like methyl, ethyl, or phenyl. They consist of inorganic silicon-oxygen backbone. (⋯-Si-O-Si-O-Si-O-⋯).
This is how silicone looks.
Common forms of silicone include - silicone oil, silicon grease, silicone rubber, silicone resin and silicone caulk.
Silicones Exhibits Useful Properties.
Here are the following properties:
- Low Thermal Conductivity
- Low Chemical reactivity
- Low Toxicity
- Thermal Stability
- Ability to repel water and form watertight seals, although silicones are not hydrophones.
- Does not stick to many substrates, but adheres very well to others
- Does not support microbiological growth
- Resistance to oxygen, ozone and ultraviolet
- Electrical insulation properties
- High Gas permeability
Silicones are used in many familiar products. The following are the various products the need the use of silicones.
1. Aquarium joints
2. Automotive
3. Coatings
4. Cookware
5. Defoaming
6. Dry Cleaning
7. Electronics
8. Firestops
9. Lubricants
10. Medicines
11. Moldmaking
12. Opthamology
13. Personal Care
14. Pumbling and building constructions
15. Sex Toys and lubricants
16. Toys
Let us now look at what is silicone sealant.
What is Silicone Sealant?
Silicone Sealant is an Elastomeric Sealant that is widely used to fill and seal gaps and joints on many common building materials. It offers great flexibility, UV resistant and is able to compensate movements between construction elements. It is commonly used to seal out water eg around a bath tub, shower screen or laundry sink, around roofs, gutters, flashing, vents, glass and even aquariums.
